I'm a contemporary representational painter working mainly in oils. My subject is people, whom I depict in sometimes highly contrived situations (though sometimes not).

My other pursuit is philosophical-scientific: understanding how representational paintings function as first-person reports of artists' conscious experience.

In the Links section (above), you'll find a 20-minute film titled “The Painter’s Vision" that explains what I’m working on. There are also links enabling you to see and hear "Visual Subjectivity and Consciousness" and “What the Painted Figure Says About the Artist,” two recent conference presentations I delivered on painting and consciousness.

Shown here: "Man At Window," oil on linen, 40 x 50 in. Detail views are in the Portfolio section.
